UMASS LOWELL ALTERNATE CARE SITE

Lowell, MA
Client: Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA)

In December 2020, MEMA engaged SLS with Sweet as a subcontractor to transform the University of Massachusetts Lowell campus recreation center, into a 100-bed COVID-19 emergency field hospital. The alternate care site ensured adequate space and medical resources would be available to treat overflow patients from Lowell General Hospital. Within 24 hours of activation, the SLS/Sweet team began transforming the university recreation center into a clean, safe full-service field hospital, capable of treating COVID-19 intermediate care patients. Working on an intensely compressed 24-hour per day construction cycle, the conversion was complete in less than seven days and utilized over 40 subcontractors plus multiple vendors and personnel. Services provided by SLS/Sweet included pipe and drape partitions, emergency generators, electrical and lighting, showers and restrooms, laundry services, medical staffing, plumbing, temporary heat, and operations.
