WORCESTER DCU ALTERNATE CARE SITES

Worcester, MA
Client: Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA)

In November 2020, MEMA engaged SLS with Sweet as a subcontractor to transform the downtown Worcester DCU Center, normally home to concerts, sporting events and trade shows, into a 221-bed COVID-19 emergency field hospital. Designed as a patient overflow facility for UMass Memorial Hospital, the ACS ensured adequate space and resources would be available to treat an expected second wave of COVID-19 cases in the region. Within 24 hours of activation, the SLS/Sweet team began transforming the convention center portion of the complex into a clean, safe full-service field hospital, capable of treating over two hundred COVID-19 intermediate care patients. Working on an intensely compressed 24-hour per day construction cycle, the conversion was complete in less than seven days and utilized over 40 subcontractors plus multiple vendors and personnel. Services provided by SLS/Sweet included pipe and drape partitions, emergency generators, electrical and lighting, showers and restrooms, laundry, plumbing, and temporary heat.
